Lexus Raises the Bar with its New LS

May 2007 – Lexus has a new LS sedan for the 2007 model year—or rather I should say three new LS sedans. The 2007 LS 460, which arrived in October, is available in a standard length and a stretched version, the LS 460 L. The L moves Lexus into the “Prestige Luxury” segment, which includes cars with price tags of over $70,000. Next spring, Lexus plans to solidify its position in this market with a mega-buck hybrid model, the LS600h.

“The Prestige market is the key to further image development and overall luxury success,” according to Brian Bolain, Lexus’ marketing manager. Lexus research has shown that high-end products build image that translates into mainsteam luxury sales. Bolain said that Lexus expects to sell 30,000 copies of the new LS, in all its versions, over the next 12 months.

Although on the surface, it would seem difficult for Lexus to improve upon the last LS, their design staff has managed to do so. The ’07 model has a more formidable look, an enhanced power train and more features.

Lexus has adopted its “L-finese” styling, which it uses on its IS and GS models, for its flagship. In many ways the LS looks like a larger version of the GS, especially around the grille and headlights. Both cars have a strong, but refined look, with sharp lines and soft curves, but overall, the LS appears heftier.

On the inside, the new LS displays the luxury features, like premium leather and highly polished wood trim, that Lexus buyers have come to expect. But the ’07 offers more standard features, like Smart Access that enables drivers to open the doors and start the engine by just having the key fob on their person. There is also a new climate-control system that senses body temperature and adjusts the air conditioning accordingly. And Lexus now includes its state-of-the-art anti-skid system (VDIM) as standard too. This system anticipates the on set of a slide and takes corrective action to keep you on the road.

The new L model gets even more standard equipment. In addition to the extra five inches of backseat legroom, the L comes with a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, heated back seats, a power trunk lid, satellite radio and a voice-activated navigation system with a backup camera.

Furthermore, buyers can order the optional Executive Class Seating package that includes a rear seat that reclines 45 degrees and comes with an ottoman leg rest, and Advanced Parking Guidance, which will steer you into a parallel parking spot. Believe me, it takes a real act of faith to use this parking feature.

Lexus powers the LS 460 and the LS 460 L with an all-new 4.6-liter V-8. This engine cranks out 380 horsepower, which is 102 more horses than the ’06 car muster. The V-8 is mated with an industry-first eight-speed automatic transmission. Together, they will propel the LS to 60 in just 5.4 seconds, like you’re on a magic carpet

If you drive the LS, as I did at the press introduction in San Francisco, I think that you will agree that Lexus has reached a new level of refinement and sophistication with its LS flagship.
