2008 Highlander Bulks Up

June 27, 2007 – Stevenson, WA. At a press preview here today, Toyota introduced its redesigned Highlander SUV to a gathering of West Coast journalists. This 2008 model doesn’t look a lot different than its predecessor, but its bigger, more powerful and provides more safety equipment now. It is also significantly heavier.

Toyota made the ’08 Highlander four inches longer, three inches wider and an inch taller than the old model. It also gave the ’08 Highlander a longer platform with a 109.8-inch wheelbase. All this translates into a roomier cabin. However, the 2008 weighs over 400 pounds more than last year’s model.

To move this larger vehicle, Toyota installed a bigger engine—its 3.5-liter V-6 with 270 horsepower. It replaces the 3.0-liter V-6 from last year that generated a modest 215 hp. (The entry level four-cylinder motor, available in 2007 models, has been discontinued.) During an introductory drive, I found that the new V-6 delivered brisk acceleration.

Later in the year, Toyota will also offer two Hybrid models of the Highlander. They will use a 3.3-liter V-6, along with electric motors to produce 270 hp as well. The Hybrids are expected to average 26 mpg.

Standard features on the Highlander include electric power steering, 17-inch wheels and a total of 10 cup holders. A clever innovation this year is a removable middle seat in the second row. It can be taken out, or swapped for a console with cup holders. Either one of these devices can be stored in a bin in the front console, which in turn can be removed when not needed.

In the safety realm, the Highlander comes with seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knees. Other notable safety features include Toyota’s advanced stability control and “active” headrests to reduce whiplash in rear-end collisions.

The Highlander will be offered in five models. The Base, Sport and Limited will be available in July; the Hybrid and Hybrid Limited will arrive in September or October. Pricing for the gasoline models starts at $27,985. Hybrid pricing is not yet known.
